However, the big question now is, will Mark Zuckerberg be able to gain success in the metaverse like Facebook in the realm of social media?
Metaverse and Mark Zuckerberg
Stuck by state officials in the “Diem” digital currency project (formerly Libra), Mark Zuckerberg continues to penetrate deeper into the digital realm, namely the metaverse.
The original concept of Meta was to present an embodied internet, where the user is in the experience, not just seeing it.
Perhaps, this is a strong reason why the Facebook boss bought the company Oculus, a VR headset manufacturer, in 2014.
After mastering the realm of social media, Meta, whose name was confirmed in 2021, seems to want to repeat a similar success in the virtual world sector.
However, the "opposition" certainly has various criticisms to thwart it, saying it will implement a "copy-acquire-kill" strategy in the metaverse.
The strategy in question is that Mark pressures his potential competitors to sell (to Meta) or risk being destroyed by his company.
This strong concern seems to be looming over Mark Zuckerberg, although of course the competition in this sector is not the same as in social media.
Monopoly Practice?
Based on a report from Vox, Wednesday (16/2/2022), Meta turned out to have secretly bought companies in the metaverse, acquiring at least five AR/VR-related companies in the past year.
The regulator, the FTC and several state attorneys general are currently investigating whether Meta is using monopoly practices in the AR/VR market or not.
Additionally, it's also reported that the FTC is looking into Meta's acquisition of Within, the company behind the popular VR fitness game Supernatural.
As was the case with the acquisitions of Whatsapp and Instagram, critics fear another monopoly attempt by Meta to make the market unhealthy.
Of course, if Mark Zuckerberg is to succeed in the metaverse, the practice that leads to monopoly must be stopped so as not to cause problems for him in the future.
Moreover, the husband of Priscilla Chan must be able to compete with metaverse companies that carry blockchain technology, aka present a decentralized metaverse.
Why? That's because people until recently, preferred the concept of decentralization because they wanted the security of their personal data. And Mark has failed at this when we talk about the incident on Facebook.
